Marquette Township Public Works Department
The Charter Township of Marquette Public Works Department is responsible for water production and distribution, well head protection, wastewater collection, solid waste collection, and storm water management.
We operate and maintain five water production wells, a 29 mile distribution network of water mains supplying five pressure districts, 400 fire hydrants, three water storage tanks totaling 1,520,000 gallons, and two water pumping stations to serve over 1,000 metered customers with outstanding quality drinking water and fire flows for fire protection. To supplement our groundwater, we purchase treated Lake Superior water from the City of Marquette. We are currently developing a second well field and have received state/federal funding for a third well field with additional transmission and storage capacity.
We operate and maintain a sanitary wastewater collection system including 18 miles of main, 200 manholes, three wastewater pumping stations, and 300 grinder pumps to serve 800 customers. We will be upgrading our three pumping stations and adding a new one in the near future. We are also co-owners of the Marquette Area Wastewater Treatment Facility, along with the City of Marquette and the Charter Township of Chocolay. The waste water treatment plant is nearing completion of a major replacement/upgrade.
Solid waste services are provided to 1300 residential customers. We provide, by a private contractor, weekly curbside pick-up of household garbage and recyclables. We also provide monthly a manned drop-off location for rubbish and metal. Twice a year, we provide a drop-off location for brush, leaves, and yard and garden waste. Household hazardous waste collection sites are provided six times a year.
We are currently developing a storm water management ordinance.
