Planning Commission

The Marquette Charter Township Planning Commission exercises the authority granted to it by the Marquette Charter Township Board, and as set forth in the Michigan Planning Enabling Act, Act 33 of 2008 and the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act, Act 110 of 2006, as amended.

The Commission acts as the principal planning, policy and program development body which provides recommendations to the Board on short- and long-term issues affecting the economic, social and physical development of the Township. The Commission is responsible for the Township Master Plan, Capital Improvement Program, sand and gravel extraction permits, all planning reports and plans before publication and other matters as directed by the Board or Township Zoning Ordinance.

Membership consists of five members for three-year terms ending on December 31, and shall be electors of the township, except for one planning commission member who may be a qualified elector of another local unit of government. Term limits do not apply, except for the commissioner who is the Township Board liaison, whose term will expire upon their term ending with the Township Board. Meetings are open to the public and are compliant with the Open Meetings Act (OMA) and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Members shall represent the important segments of the community, such as economic, governmental, educational and social development, agriculture, natural resources, recreation, public health, transportation, industry and commerce. In January of each year, members will elect a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and Secretary.

The prospective member will complete an application and submit it to the Township Supervisor for recommendation to the Township Board. The Supervisor will conduct a short interview with all candidates interested in the seat and will make the recommendation to the Board at the last meeting in December.

Just prior to expiration of the term, applications will again be taken from all interested individuals.

Meetings are held the second and fourth Wednesday of the month in the Marquette Township Board Room and are recorded on YouTube. Members receive a stipend and each member will take a constitutional oath of office.
